Brake Calipers 101

Brake calipers are clamps found on your Mercedes-Benz model's disc brakes. Most brake systems have front calipers, at least, although some have rear calipers, too. They contain at least one brake piston, depending on the kind the system has, and brake pads attach to them. What they do is fasten the pads to brake rotors; this generates the friction used for slowing down and stopping. (Drum brakes do the same, but with brake shoes and brake drums.)

How they work is a process. It starts when you step on your brake pedal. The system's master brake cylinder pressurizes brake fluid, the fluid traverses a series of brake hoses and lines, the pistons activate, and the calipers engage, clamping to the rotors and producing said resistance using the pads. The process creates heat, which the rotors dissipate.

The signs of bad brake calipers include brake and/or ABS lights on the dash, seal buildup, corrosion, and/or decay, brake fluid leaks (in the engine and onto the wheels), erratic brake pressure, sideways drift when braking, and squealing and continuous grinding sounds.
