What are Common Mercedes-Benz Exhaust Problems?

If you're driving an older Mercedes-Benz model -- a Mercedes-Benz E 320, for instance, or a Mercedes-Benz 300 SE from the 1990s -- you've probably seen the Check Engine come on once or twice, at least, maybe even gotten an error code for oxygen sensor failure.

Usually, it's just a case of a leaking exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe (or, with sluggish acceleration and a failed emissions test -- say, with a Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan -- it could be a clogged catalytic converter). But if the muffler's unusually noisy, you're having engine trouble, and gas mileage is getting worse, you've likely got other issues in the exhaust system.

That's a big deal. The exhaust fails, you'll run afoul of emissions standards, a few laws, even maybe end up sick from the noxious byproducts -- carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides -- of the engine burning fuel and air -- of the engine burning fuel and air: pollution the exhaust would normally catch and turn into water vapor and carbon dioxide before it becomes a problem.

Whatever part of the exhaust ends up being the trouble -- if not the exhaust manifold, then likely the catalytic converter, but sometimes even the resonator -- you'll have to replace it ASAP. If it's been a few years or around 100,000 miles since your last exhaust maintenance, you're probably due anyway.
