The Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 is a full-size luxury crossover SUV by Mercedes-Benz. Introduced in the 2020 model year, it is sold under the GLS class. The GLS class is considered the flagship SUV lineup of Mercedes-Benz. GLS shares the same unibody architecture with the midsize GLE class. The ‘G’ in GLS denotes Gelandewagen or off-road vehicle, while ‘S’ means S-class.
GLS class vehicles started production in 2006 and the GLS 580 was added to the lineup in 2020. Along with the GLS 450, the GLS 580 represents the third generation of Mercedes Benz’s flagship SUV. The GLS 580 is the performance option, with a beefier twin-turbo 4.0-liter hybrid V8. For the 2020 model, the hybrid engine produces 483 hp and 516 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a nine-speed automatic. With the 2024 GLS 580, the hybrid powertrain’s output improves to 510 hp and 538 pound-feet of torque.
Differences Between GLS 450 and GLS 580
For the 2024 model year, the starting price difference for both luxury SUVs is roughly $25,000. Both the GLS 450 and the GLS 580 are both full-size luxury SUV models with near-identical dimensions, but the GLS 450 comes with a smaller, more modest turbo I6 hybrid engine. The smaller powertrain of the GLS 450 saves more fuel, rated for 24 mpg highway compared to the GLS 580’s 20 mpg. Wheels are larger for the GLS 580, which is equipped with 22-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels. Interior, entertainment, and safety features for both models are similar. With that said, the GLS 580 boasts a Burmester Surround Sound System with 13 high-performance speakers and a 9-channel DSP 590-watt amplifier.
