The Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG is a roadster that is part of the SL class. The SL class is a lineup of grand touring sports cars that Mercedes-Benz has produced since 1954. SL stands for “Sport-Leicht” which is German for “Sport Light”. The SL 63 AMG debuted in 2009 and is currently top-of-the-line for the SL class.
When the SL 63 AMG was introduced for the 2009 model year, it came with a 6.2-liter V8 that impressed with 518 hp and 465 pound-feet of torque. When it was road-tested by Car and Driver, it hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. But it might come as a surprise for newer Mercedes-AMG fans that the SL 63 was not the highest-end model under the SL class. That distinction belonged to the SL 65 AMG, which was also tested by Car and Driver. It went from 0 to 60 in under four seconds. The SL 65 AMG’s powertrain is no joke. With a 6.0-liter V12 engine, it produced 604 hp and 738 pound-feet of torque. Since the 2019 model year, the SL 63 has been the best the SL class has to offer. Since then, two other roadsters have joined the lineup. These are the entry-level SL 43 and the mid-range SL 55.
